RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sasha Colby Introduces Chappell Roan As Her Daughter At MTV VMAs: ‘Pop Music Is Inclusive’

Sasha introduced Roan’s Joan of Arc-inspired performance of “Good Luck, Babe!” after the star referenced Sasha on stage at Coachella and again on late night TV.

Your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen just introduced your favorite artist’s favorite artist as her official daughter at the 2024 MTV VMAs.

RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15 winner and all-around LGBTQ icon Sasha Colby took the stage Wednesday night in New York, where she shared a few sweet words ahead of rising queer pop starlet (and personal friend) Chappell Roan’s performance of her hit song “Good Luck, Babe!” during the live telecast — and unofficially welcomed Roan into the Colby dynasty drag family.

“Pop music is inclusive, no matter what you look like, who you love, it’s meant for everyone, and no one has revitalized that spirit more than this next artist,” Sasha said on the VMAs stage. “You have all watched her blow up, the midwest princess is in the house. Your favorite drag queen’s favorite artist, here is my daughter, Chappell Roan!”

Roan’s subsequent performance of “Good Luck, Babe!” included medieval imagery, lots of shiny armor, burning crosses, and an overall Joan of Arc theme. The set came hours after Sasha’s fellow Drag Race alum Plane Jane hit the carpet while dressed in an outfit that invoked Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” aesthetic.

She’s also not the first person to be adopted by Sasha, as the season 15 champ previously told EW she adopted a production staffer named Justin on the set of Drag Race in 2022.
Roan released “Good Luck, Babe!” in April, before the song became one of the 2024 summer season’s defining hits. Since, she has notched six additional singles from her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess on the Billboard Hot 100, where “Good Luck, Babe!” peaked at No. 6. The VMAs responded accordingly, and awarded Roan with four nominations at this year’s ceremony — including one for Best New Artist.

Amid her meteoric rise in popularity, Roan, who identifies as a lesbian and whose aesthetic has been compared to the art of drag, performed at Coachella earlier this year, where she made a direct reference to a quote that Sasha popularized on Drag Race season 15 in 2023.

“My name is Chappell Roan. I’m your favorite artist’s favorite artist,” Roan said on stage at the music festival, which she later revealed on the Tonight Show was a nod to Sasha introducing herself as “I am your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen” in her Meet the Queens cast reveal video.

“It’s been wild. The night of the finale for season 16, when I gave up the crown, was also the night of the finale for my Stripped [tour], and that’s when Chappell said it at Coachella,” Sasha exclusively told EW in July. “It all coincided, and has snowballed ever since,” she continued. “To see Jimmy Fallon say my name [on Tonight Show] is kind of wild. I just talked to Chappell, we just talked for a little bit. We were very meet-and-greet-y, like, ‘I love you, I think you’re amazing.'”

Sasha also praised Roan for being a mirror for drag queens in pop culture. “Since Drag Race, we are pop, the tastemakers, and pop girlies look to us for inspiration — much like Chappell Roan!” Sasha explained. “All I can say is, goddess sees goddess, you know? Greatness sees greatness!”

Sasha isn’t the only Drag Race alum to make VMAs news in recent years; at the 2023 ceremony, All Stars 8 finalist Kandy Muse made headlines when she hilariously announced that she left the event early because she had to poop.
