McGee’s New NCIS Season 22 Job Creates A Problem For MCRT, Producer Reveals

Showrunner Steven D. Binder previews how Tim McGee’s new job in NCIS season 22 impacts the Major Case Response Team. Admittedly, MCRT’s most veteran member didn’t get much focus in NCIS season 21. Instead, he played a vital role in other storylines, including the death of Ducky and even Nick Torres’ case in the premiere. Luckily, the upcoming year of CBS’ hit procedural drama is trying to change that with an interesting storyline for McGee that could end up changing NCIS drastically moving forward.

In an interview with TV Line, Binder confirms that McGee will be “angling for a deputy director position” in NCIS season 22. He doesn’t say why he decides that he wants to move up the ranks after over two decades in the service, but the showrunner reveals that in doing so, Murray’s character will discover something amiss in the agency that will eventually include MCRT. Being the investigative hound that Tim is, he’s going to sniff something on the way to this journey. He’s going to see that something is not right in the halls of government around him.

The Repercussions Of McGee Seeking A Promotion In NCIS Season 22
McGee Seeking A Promotion May Be Tied To NCIS Season 22’s Mole Case

Since Binder doesn’t discuss what leads to McGee’s decision to seek promotion, it’s difficult to say why he would want to move up the ranks now. For context, he was offered to take over Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ position as MCRT’s leader after Mark Harmon’s departure in NCIS season 19. Interestingly, however, he turned down the stint, explaining that he didn’t want the additional paperwork. Given this, whatever changed his mind about his career this time, maybe something that’s vital to his personal arc. Whether he’ll get the said promotion, however, is uncertain at this point.

For what it’s worth, this isn’t the first time that McGee and Vance will experience this kind traitor crisis within the organization.

In any case, it does seem that regardless of what happens to McGee’s endeavor, MCRT will be involved. Perhaps this leads to the mole storyline which is confirmed for NCIS season 22. As Binder says, the detective’s investigative skills will lead to a massive discovery. For what it’s worth, this isn’t the first time that McGee and Vance will experience this kind of traitor crisis within the organization. Back in NCIS seasons 5 and 6, Gibbs’ best team had to work stealthily to figure out the traitor in the organization.

Our Take On Whether McGee Will Get His Promotion In NCIS Season 22?
NCIS Cannot Lose McGee

In the end, I don’t think McGee will get a promotion — at least not in a traditional way. Moving up the ranks means that he will have to leave MCRT, and at this point, the team cannot afford to lose another original member. He is currently the longest-serving cast member in NCIS season 22, and Murray hasn’t expressed any desire to leave the project in the near future. McGee may be awarded a part-time job that is more administrative, but it won’t take him away from being a field agent, which he really loves.
